Looking right on screen and printing right are different problems.
Print-ready is a specific technical state, not a compliment. Here is each requirement, what goes wrong when it is missed, and how to check before you upload.

Print-ready is not praise. It is a specific technical state, and a file either meets it or does not. A cover can be beautifully designed, look perfect on your monitor, and still be rejected in seconds by a validator that never considers whether it is any good.
Here is what each requirement means, what actually goes wrong when it is missed, and how to check your own file before uploading it.
Bleed, and why trimming is imprecise
Books are printed on oversized sheets and then cut down. Cutting is mechanical and has tolerance, typically a millimetre or two in either direction. Your artwork must account for both possibilities.
Bleed is artwork extended past the trim line, usually 0.125 inch on every outer edge, that exists purely to be thrown away. If the blade lands slightly outside the intended line, it cuts into that sacrificial area and the reader sees a full-bleed cover. Without it, the same cut exposes the white paper underneath as a thin sliver along one edge.
The most common mistake is adding bleed on the left and right and forgetting the top and bottom, which produces a cover that fails on two edges out of four.
Safe area, the opposite instruction
Bleed protects against cutting outside the line. Safe area protects against cutting inside it.
Keep text and anything that must not be clipped at least 0.25 inch inside the trim line. Type sitting closer than that risks being trimmed, and even when it survives intact it looks crowded, which reads as amateur without the reader identifying why.
Spine text needs more caution still. The fold has its own tolerance on top of the trim tolerance, so text centred on a thin spine can drift visibly toward one edge. Many designers avoid spine text entirely below roughly 100 pages, because there is not enough width to absorb the variance.
CMYK, and colors that cannot be printed
Screens emit light and mix red, green, and blue. Presses apply ink and mix cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. These are different physical processes with different achievable ranges, and some colors exist in one and not the other.

This is why a cover designed in RGB can be disappointing in the proof. The colors were never printable; the screen was showing something the press cannot reproduce. Designing in CMYK from the start means what you see is what exists.
One related trap is black. Pure black in CMYK, meaning 100 percent black ink alone, prints as a slightly washed dark grey over large areas. Designers use a rich black, mixing in other inks, for large solid areas. Small text should stay single-ink black, because rich black on small type shows any misregistration as colored fringing.
Embedded fonts and flattened layers
Two file-level requirements that cause a surprising share of rejections.
- Fonts must be embedded in the PDF. If they are merely referenced, the printer's system substitutes whatever it has, and your careful typography silently becomes something else. Converting text to outlines also works and is irreversible, so keep an editable copy.
- Transparency should be flattened. Live transparency effects can render inconsistently across different print systems.
- Spot colors should be converted unless you have specifically arranged spot printing, which print-on-demand does not offer.
- Layers should be flattened in the delivered file. Keep your layered working file separately for future edits.
- Everything should be one page. The print cover is a single flat spread, not three pages in one document.
Resolution, and why upscaling does not work
300 DPI at final printed size is the standard, and the phrase at final size is the part that gets missed.
An image is a fixed number of pixels. Enlarging it does not create detail, it spreads the same pixels over more area. Software that offers to upscale is inventing plausible pixels, which can work acceptably for soft photographic areas and falls apart on edges and text.
The practical rule: a 6 x 9 inch cover needs artwork of roughly 1,800 x 2,700 pixels at minimum, before bleed. If your source image is 800 pixels wide, no export setting will make it print sharply, and the honest answer is to find a different image rather than a different setting.
Finish, and how it changes the design
Cover finish is chosen at upload, treated as an afterthought, and changes the printed result more than most authors expect. It is worth deciding before the design is final rather than after.
Matte lamination scatters light. It feels soft and expensive in the hand, and it mutes colors slightly, which suits literary fiction, memoir, and muted palettes. Its weakness is deep solid colors, where fingerprints and handling marks show readily on dark matte covers.
Gloss lamination reflects light. Colors appear more saturated and images look sharper, which suits thrillers, children's books, and anything with a photographic cover doing the selling. Its weakness is glare, and heavy text over a glossy background can be genuinely hard to read under a shop light.
The practical implication is that a design built to look right on a bright screen often reads as flat in matte. If you are choosing matte, it is worth pushing contrast slightly further than looks correct on your monitor, because the finish will take some of it back. This is another reason a physical proof matters: finish is one of the things a screen cannot simulate at all.
Which of this you actually have to care about
This page contains a lot of specification, and it is worth saying plainly which parts are yours to worry about and which belong to whoever builds the file.
If you are hiring a designer, essentially none of it is your problem, with two exceptions: you must supply an accurate final page count, and you must order and check a proof. Everything else is the work you are paying for. What this page gives you in that situation is the ability to tell whether the files you receive are actually print-ready, and the vocabulary to ask if something looks wrong.
If you are building the cover yourself, all of it is yours, and the sequence matters as much as the individual numbers. It is also worth reading what a cover has to accomplish before worrying about specification, because a technically perfect file of a cover that fails the thumbnail test has solved the easier of the two problems.
Checking your own file
You do not need professional software to catch most problems. These checks use what you already have.
A pre-upload check that catches most rejections
- Open the PDF and check the page size against trim plus bleed on all four edges. This single check catches the most common failure.
- Zoom to 100 percent and inspect every image area for softness. Screen-fit view hides resolution problems entirely.
- Check document properties for embedded fonts. Most PDF readers list them.
- Print one page at home on plain paper. Not for color accuracy, but to see whether anything sits uncomfortably close to an edge.
- View it in greyscale. If the title stops standing out, contrast is doing less work than you think.
- Confirm the spine measurement against the page count of the exact interior file you are uploading.
Then order a physical proof. A screen cannot show you trimming, paper colour, or how matte lamination changes a dark cover. A proof costs a few dollars and a few days, and it is the only stage that tests what the reader actually receives.
When the proof arrives, look at it in ordinary daylight rather than at your desk, and look at it from a metre away before examining it closely. Most covers are first seen at a distance and at an angle, not held square under a lamp. Check that the title still reads from across the room, that the trim looks even on all four edges, and that the spine text sits where you intended rather than creeping toward a fold.
